It’s Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Dennis Tufano, and La La Brooks - three incredible acts from the magically musical era of rock, pop, and soul - the 1960s! Dennis Tufano is a founding member, and original lead singer, of The Buckingham’s, one of the few American-born groups that managed to defend their place in rock ‘n’ roll during the British Invasion. La La Brooks sang lead for The Crystals on some of the their biggest hits, and Gary Lewis & The Playboys enjoyed an enviable position as one of the most successful groups of the 60s.
Son of comedian, actor, and philanthropist, Jerry Lewis, Gary and his band were incredibly influential in music throughout the 60s, releasing several Top 40 hits, including the #1 smash, “This Diamond Ring.” Other songs from Gary Lewis & The Playboys include the Top Ten hits, “Count Me In,” “Everybody Loves a Clown,” “Green Grass,” “Sure Gonna Miss Her,” and “She’s Just My Style.” Eight of their singles and four of their albums were certified Gold, and Gary was named Male Vocalist of the Year in 1965 by Cashbox Magazine, beating out two huge solo artists - Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra! They made television appearances on nearly every talk and variety show, including Shindig, American Bandstand, and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
The Buckingham’s, with Dennis Tufano singing lead, were brilliant at pulling off an upbeat sound regardless of a song’s subject matter, that includes their huge #1 hit, “Kind of A Drag.” They also had Top Ten hits with “Don’t You Care,” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” and just barely missed the Top Ten with “Hey Baby (They’re Playing Our Song,)” and “Susan.” La La Brooks fronted The Crystals during their biggest years, and sang lead on their Top Five hit, “Da Doo Ron Ron,” and their Top Ten hit, “Then He Kissed Me.” She can also sing the daylights out of The Crystal’s #1 hit, “He’s a Rebel,” the song that was recorded by Darlene Love’s group, but released in The Crystal’s name. Their music hits the right note with television and movie producers, too - “Then He Kissed Me” can be heard in an episode of The Simpsons, and in movies as diverse as Adventures in Babysitting and Goodfellas!
