No destination doles out family entertainment quite like Branson, Missouri! Ever since the Presley and Mabe families - Presleys’ Country Jubilee and Branson’s Famous Baldknobbers, respectively - crafted the music scene in Branson more than 50 years ago, families have been flocking to the area, both visiting families and family shows. One of the latest and greatest additions to the family show lineup is the sensational Johnson Strings, the uber-talented family that convinces everyone that eight is certainly enough to deliver an incredible performance night after night! When it comes to their music, mom, dad, and six sensational siblings put a capital V on variety, delighting packed houses with a nice array that includes gospel, movie theme songs, vocal hits, classical numbers, ragtime tunes, Irish music, songs with a patriotic theme, piano-harp music, and even more. And the list of instruments the Johnson’s have mastered is mind-blowing, it includes: mandolin, banjo, cello, viola, bass, piano-harp, and violin.
Although there’s obviously God-given talent at play here, the Johnsons didn’t just hit the road with their instruments and hope for the best. Thousands of hours of training, rehearsing, and just plain hard work went into creating this family full of exceptional artists. All of the Johnsons were trained at a young age in the Suzuki method, a way of learning to play an instrument that applies the basic principles of how a child acquires their native language. The method’s creator also believed that learning this way helped to foster good moral character...just a few minutes into any performance by The Johnson Strings, and both their excellent musicianship and good character are undeniable! And the talent of these kids doesn’t end with music; each has honed their skills at a variety of activities and arts, including painting, writing, and sculpting -- daughter, Karen, is a certified chef, and you’ll find her deliciously tempting baked goods in the theater’s concession area!
When it comes to the specifics in their show, you can expect to hear The Johnson Strings play everything from “Stars and Stripes Forever,” to the fiddle song that’s pretty much a Branson staple for any show that features at least one fiddle player - “Orange Blossom Special.” They perform at the Majestic Theatre most Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays at 7:30 p.m. - the Majestic is a big building, but the theatre where the family performs is an intimate one, with just over a hundred seats. The up-close-and-personal venue is ideal for the Johnsons’ performance style, but sold out shows can happen quickly, so getting reservations made early is strongly encouraged.
The Johnson family spent years on the road, wowing audiences in nearly every part of the country, before settling on Branson as their personal and professional home - for everyone who’s met them and seen their show, they wouldn’t have it any other way! Remember, they perform in an intimate theater setting with limited seating; it means there isn’t a bad seat in the house, but it also means that you need to book early for your preferred performance date!
